Arrival Day Salisbury University Field Hockey tour – May 27, 2009 – Wednesday
Everyone from the Salisbury group has arrived safely into Rome and made it through the first day of sightseeing. Below is a blog from Senior Jennifer Bandy.
Day 1 – Wednesday
The plane ride was a rough ride for some who could not get any sleep. I myself, always look forward to the airline food, everyone else I think, looked forward to getting off the plane; especially after almost 8 hours. We arrived at 7:50 am in Rome, got some money and headed onto a bus. Immediately the tour began!
It is a struggle to be thrust into a new environment to soak in the culture, history, and sights in only a few moments. We had free time first in Rome, and struggled to find our bearings, but soon we all took off in our own groups of four or more to walk the city on our own adventures. After lunch on our own (most of us ate at SquiSito via Cavour; yummy!), we met back up for a guided tour of all the sights. No rain or clouds here! The perfect weather only made the experience even better! By the way, the food was excellent!
Our guided tour started at about 2pm. We walked about 4 miles as we took off from the Coleseum and headed for stops at the Trevi Fountain, Patheon and the Piazza di Novona. It was very crowded with tourists and soccer fans. Tonight is the super bowl of soccer. Barcelona is playing Manchester United for the championship game of the Champions league.
After barely any sleep, and walking around all day in the warm Italian sun, we all bolted to the bus in order to quickly settle in to our hotel, have dinner, and head to bed. More details tomorrow as we begin our journey of Vatican City…
Game one tomorrow evening!
